 SoF Gold Has Gone Gold
Posted by EvilGreg on Tuesday, September 26, 2000

You read right! To follow up on the post below me, SoF Gold has gone gold. An update in Jake Simpson's .plan explains it all:
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, so I thought I'd do so. SOF GOLD has gone gold, and we should be seeing it in stores sometime soon. May.be even as soon as this weekend, but no promises there. The patch to upgrade your existing SOF to SOF GOLD should be around once the product has hit the stores. No exact dates, since there are many factors involved there. Anyway, it's done, and it's free to those that have already purchased SOF.

UPDATE!- SOF GOLD has been delayed until the 28th. Check this page for current information on the release date.

SoF Center has gotten ahold of some new screenshots of the upcoming mod Dead Before Dawn.

 New Hostile Intent Version
Posted by EvilGreg on Friday, September 22, 2000

Hostile Intent has been updated to a newer version, and I'll let Hostile himself do all the explaining.

We have released our new version, which includes two new maps, instead of one, and a slew of new features (all listed on the news page). We also launched our new site design, and introduced some of the work of the artist who represents the newest addition to the Hostile Intent team.

 SoF Center News
Posted by EvilGreg on Thursday, September 21, 2000

SoF Center has some features going on right now. First off, they have put up #23 of the Developer's Diary feature. In this one Keith Talks about a fellow worker, Rob Gee. Rob is a 2d/3d animator for Raven.

Secondly, they have put up part 4 of their Mod Week. They interviewed Payback of the upcoming mod Dead Before Dawn.

Lastly, they have 3 screenshots of the upcoming map for SoF entitled Aliens vs. Turbo. This map will definitely be special because it is Turbo's last map and is going to be Soldier of Fortune's first user made single player map!

 SoF ModCentral Back Up
Posted by EvilGreg on Monday, September 18, 2000

SoF ModCentral is back up and running. They were in the process of switching servers and therefore had problems updating the news there. It wasn't because they were giving up. Also, Cybermouse needs your help with the site. He wants someone who can do reviews, previews, and so on. You must have a good understanding of HTML for this position, so if you feel you can help, e-mail him.

 John Mullins Interview
Posted by EvilGreg on Sunday, September 17, 2000

John Mullins sat down for 20 questions with The Mushroom. He talks more about his personal life than of Soldier of Fortune, but it is definitely worth your time to read.

 GUM Is Now Hosted
Posted by wmull on Sunday, September 17, 2000

... right here at Soldier-of-Fortune.com! Thanks to Michael 'Homez' Dickinson for creating the mod, and our own EvilGreg for creating the website! If you're still wondering just what the heck GUM is, well it stands for Gun Upgrade Mod, simply enough. It's a modification for Soldier of Fortune that includes new weapons sounds, in an effort to impart an even more realistic feel to the game. Version 2.10 is now available, so be sure to check it out!

 Gun Upgrade Mod Available!
Posted by wmull on Thursday, September 14, 2000

Michael 'Homez' Dickinson has finished version 1.40 of the GUM (Gun Upgrade Mod), formerly known as Homez Sound mod. We have it available right here (980KB) for download. The mod is a sound mod that includes more realistic sounds. An upcoming version will include new gun textures and possibly a few new gun models (if he manages to find someone to help him out; so if you're interested, please send him an email). Homez is also considering creating a new main character for SoF that would replace John Mullins, but that's definitely on hold until GUM is totally finished.

You can see the interview in all its glory here.

 Bot Question
Posted by EvilGreg on Sunday, September 10, 2000

The SoF Shrimpwars has put up a little question they asked Keith Fuller regarding the DM bot that is going to be released with SoF Gold. Here it is:
I understand that the upcoming bot included in SoF-Gold is a DM-only bot, but what about mods which remain DM? Will we soon be able to play them offline?

Well, if you want the bot to behave well in non-standard DM you'll have to do some coding yourself, but that will definitely be a possibility if/when the bot code becomes publicly available.

 Banning Sales To Minors
Posted by EvilGreg on Wednesday, September 6, 2000

In an article by USA today, Kmart and Wal-Mart have decided to ban the sales of Mature rated games to minors under the age of 17. Here is a piece of the article:
Kmart announced Thursday it will refuse sale of mature-rated games to anyone under 17, using a barcode scanner that will prompt cashiers to ask for identification from young people.

After Kmart's news conference in Washington, Wal-Mart announced it would adopt the same policy. In a letter last month to Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the president of Toys R Us said the practice is already in place at his company's stores.

Well, personally I think this sucks because if this was in effect about 6 months ago, I wouldn't even have Soldier of Fortune. If you are interested in the rest of the article, you can see it all here.

 Friday Night Firefight Interview
Posted by EvilGreg on Wednesday, September 6, 2000

Mod week continues on over at SoFCenter, and the newest addition is an interview with killjoy, project director/lead programmer, of another hosted mod, Friday Night Firefight. Here's a section:
Friday Night Firefight [FNF] is a realistic roleplaying single and team-play modification. Most important aspects are dynamic branching of maps based on outcome of current map. Plots are up to the individual map makers to decide what they want in a campaign.
You can see the rest here.

The Team Deathmatch section of the League will resume with the release of the 1.06 patch from Raven Software.

 Hostile-Operations Interview
Posted by EvilGreg on Monday, September 4, 2000

SoFCenter has put up the second article covering their mod week, this time an interview with Cuyahooga from the SoF Mod Hostile Operations. Here is what Cuyahooga had to say about their upcoming mod:
Well, it will be damn fine! We know that much. We are going for a realistic terrorist vs. counter-terrorist mod with many inspirations from Counter-strike and Rogue Spear. However, expect much more involved missions with kick arse maps! Loads of features will get in there, realistic damage, immobilisation, multiple teams, 100% new original models, maps and weapons are to name a few.

 Mod Week
Posted by EvilGreg on Sunday, September 3, 2000

SoF Center is kicking off their mod week with an interview of our very own Hostile from the Hostile Intent mod. Check this:
2. Could you give us a brief description of the mod, such as features, basic plot etc.

Ok, well, in short Hostile Intent is a class based realism mod. Basically I'm here to make the game a bit more realistic and fresh. We take every oportunity to throw a curve ball at the player(i.e. HUD no longer exists) in the name of more unique and realistic(dare I say fun) gameplay. On top of everything, players will eventually be able to choose a class(such as sniper or commando, etc...) that will set up their skillbase(what weapons they have trained with, and in some cases, what items they will spawn with). There are a million and one features that are gonna have to be implemented to reach our goal, so I can't really go over them here, but I'm sure everyone gets the idea.

 New Review
Posted by EvilGreg on Saturday, September 2, 2000

Well, it's a bit late, but DeadAlfs 2000 has put up a review of Soldier of Fortune giving it a good rating of 4 out of 5 alfies.
