 Windows ME
Posted by EvilGreg on Thursday, August 31, 2000

Once again, Keith Fuller was kind enough to let me know about what kind of support is planned for Windows ME in the upcoming SoF Gold. He passed it along to Rick Johnson, and this is what he had to say:
Basically, we have it working here under Windows ME. There's a driver issue with the i810 chipset and SOF Gold will address that issue (as well as a future driver update from Intel). Anything else preventing SOF from running under ME probably has to do with un-seasoned drivers.

 SoF Gold Release Info
Posted by EvilGreg on Wednesday, August 30, 2000

I've been getting a lot of questions asking when SoF Gold is coming out. So I asked Keith Fuller and here is what he had to say:
I can say that all of the content is done, all of the known bugs are squashed, and we're just waiting on one niggling issue to be resolved. It probably won't come out too far behind Elite Force.

 SoF Gold != Co-Op
Posted by wmull on Wednesday, August 30, 2000

Kenn Hoekstra forwarded me his response to a question asking if the next SoF patch (a.k.a SoF Gold) would include a cooperative mode:
I'm sorry to say that Co-Op will not be implemented by Raven for Soldier of Fortune. It is our hope that the mod community will tackle the project and produce it for everyone to enjoy. Sadly, Raven must move on to its next set of projects and we don't have the time to make Co-Op play for SoF.
I hope that puts the question to rest, unless and until some of our industrious community members hopefully will want to take this request into consideration and can make it happen :)

 Racist, Schmacist
Posted by wmull on Wednesday, August 30, 2000

If your Thursday's just not quite complete, and you happen to need an example of stupidity incarnate, check this out. I especially like the part that says Americans are racist, but then goes on to call us 'Gung ho cowboys who think they're John Wayne'. ;)

Kenn Hoekstra On Future Ports of SoF
Posted by Demolisher on Tuesday, August 22, 2000

When asked about Soldier Of Fortune making it to to Playstation 2 and Dreamcast, Kenn Hoekstra gave this reply:
Right now there are no plans to port Soldier of Fortune to the PSX 2. That could change, though, if we're approached about it by a PSX 2 developer. If SoF makes its way to the PSX 2, www.ravensoft.com and your local Soldier of Fortune fan site will carry the news.

Kenn Hoekstra on V5 SoF Problems
Posted by Demolisher on Monday, August 21, 2000

Kenn Hoekstra updated his .plan with a fix for some people having problems with Soldier of Fortune on the Voodoo 5 card:
I've been getting some complaints about Voodoo5 cards doing wacky things with Soldier of Fortune. Textures lose all detail and there's general graphics wackiness going on that aren't resolved by the current drivers available for the card. EvilAvatar informs me that the Wicked3D drivers fix the problem.

 Soldier Of Fortune Editorial
Posted by EvilGreg on Sunday, August 20, 2000

Eurogamer has written up an editorial on Soldier of Fortune that deals with sof being classified as an 'Adult Rating' Here is a brief section:

Activision told us that "we are opposed to censorship, as we believe that every adult has the right to make their own decisions about the entertainment products they want for themselves and their families".

I agree completely, but restricting the sale of Soldier of Fortune to adults is not censorship, it is simply ensuring that children are not able to buy a game which, by the developers' own admission, was not designed with children in mind. If anything it is putting the decision back into the hands of adults, which Activision claims to support.

 Blame Canada!
Posted by wmull on Friday, August 11, 2000

There's a report on The Globe and Mail that Activision is (rightfully) appealing Brittish Columbia giving Soldier of Fortune (that's right, the game?!) an X-Rating:
Victoria -- The U.S. manufacturers of Soldier of Fortune are launching a legal battle over an unprecedented British Columbia ruling classifying the graphic computer game as an adult motion picture.

Activision Inc. announced yesterday it will appeal the decision by B.C.'s provincial director of film classification that restricts minors under 18 from renting and selling the CD-ROM game. The Canadian distributor of the game, Beamscope Canada, has also filed an appeal with B.C.'s Motion Picture Appeal Board.

"The action of the Film Classification board undermines consumers' rights of freedom and choice of expression and sets a precedent for government censorship," the California-based Activision said in a statement released yesterday.

Mary-Louise McCausland, B.C.'s director of film classification, rated Soldier of Fortune as an adult motion picture in a ruling last month after receiving a citizen complaint.

 Jake Simpson Interview
Posted by Demolisher on Thursday, August 10, 2000

Stomped has an interview with Raven programmer Jake Simpson in which he discusses Raven's popular games. Here is a preview:
Stomped: When was the decision made to make a big multiplayer update to Soldier of Fortune?

Simpson: Soldier of Fortune Gold is just a little something to give back. Epic did it; they produced free new content, and we felt it was a good idea. We wanted to make it free. Activision said it was a good idea and we jumped at the chance. Most of the people at Raven are working on Voyager really hard and are trying to get it finished, but we dragged some of the people off and added some new deathmatch levels. We wanted to be able to do it quickly. To produce some new single player levels would have taken quite a bit more time, so we decided to put in a couple of new deathmatch modes in there and tidy up some of the AI that wasn't quite as tight as it could have been (in the single player).
