One More Interview for You Posted by Fragger on Thursday, June 28, 2001
Yes, we have another interview for you. This time around, it’s Jon Zuk’s turn. He’s the Project Lead for Soldier of Fortune 2. Here’s a sample:I think what we've seen in the last couple of years is a fragmentation of single-player and multiplayer into two sub-genres. Each is now working towards two different goals. The single-player FPS is working on making more engaging stories and really making the player feel like he or she is the persona in the game. Click here for the whole interview.

It's "Raven Day"! Posted by Fragger on Saturday, June 23, 2001
To celebrate Raven Software's 11th anniversary, the guys at jediknight.net are featuring a number of articles related to the new Jedi Knight game, and also, they have a preview of SOF2! Here's a little sample:"Graphically, Soldier of Fortune II is intensified. SOF used a modified Quake 2 engine, while the sequel uses the powerful Quake III Team Arena engine. Raven is also implementing ROAM technology for Quake III Team Arena to add gigantic outdoor environments. Literally miles of terrain are now fully explorable." Go check out the whole story here!
Quake Turns Five Posted by Fragger on Friday, June 22, 2001
Remember when id Software first released Quake shareware on the Net? Wow! A real 3D game! (It was compared with Duke). What a rush that was, being able to go on the net and join a game in progress. No lines, no wait. But you might think: Why is this guy talking about Quake? Isn’t this an SOF site?. Well, the reason for that is very simple: Without Quake, there would be no SOF. Here’s why: - Before Quake, we had Duke. And Doom before it. Those games were 2.5d at best, since all objects were sprites that turned to face you all the time, creating the illusion of 3D.
- You had to be lucky enough to play with another human being, since you could only join a game at the beginning.
- There was no Gamespy to help you find servers!
- What about net coding and prediction? It wasn’t until Quake that we could have something like Quakeworld.
Quake also gave us the following:· Rocket Jumping · Custom models · Skins · Grappling hooks · Team Fortress · Quake 2
Yes, that brings us to Quake 2! One of the best engines ever created (in my opinion), wouldn’t have been possible if Quake hadn't been so good. Think about it… Half-Life and its add-ons, Kingpin, they're all cool games. Oh, and the KING of games, IMHO, Soldier of Fortune! Quake seems to be a living, evolving entity that keeps bringing us our much needed shot of adrenaline. Now in its third iteration, we can see a lot more realistic models and environments.
Raven Software (Who also has its anniversary this week. Nice coincidence!), gave us our first taste of what they can do with the new engine by making Elite Force. The Q3A engine, in Raven’s hands, will bring us a new SOF game next year. Happy Anniversary Quake! Your legacy truly lives on, and I'm greatly looking forward to seeing what the future holds for all of us in your many guises to come!
Raven Gets Old! Posted by Za0oO on Friday, June 22, 2001
This coming Sunday, June 24th Raven Software will be a decade-and-a-year old! From Kenn Hoekstra's .plan:All this talk of Quake's five-year anniversary reminded me that this Sunday is Raven Software's eleven-year anniversary! In 1990, five men and one computer in a basement started Raven Software with a vision: to create an RPG for the Amiga. That game was Black Crypt. Eleven years and fourteen titles later, Raven Software has expanded to more than 50 employees and is working on not one, but three game titles. Pretty cool stuff... Pretty cool indeed! Congratulations, Raven! Here's to many more!
Get Ready To Say Buh-Bye To Pop-Ups! Posted by wmull on Wednesday, June 20, 2001
That's right! Those of you who visit this site are going to have to start doing without some things.... but I'm 100% sure nobody's going to miss them! At the end of this month, no more of those ultra-uncool, perpetually annoying (or is that annoyingly perpetual?), maniacally-multiplying..... ever-evil pop-ups! That's when the campaign is set to end, and I'm upholding my end of the bargain by holding out until then before I get rid of them. But that little experiment gone wrong will be a thing of the past! And there was much rejoicing......

Files Section / Review Center Downtime Posted by wmull on Monday, June 4, 2001
I apologize for the Files Section / Review Center's downtime the last few days, but we're in the middle of switching everything to a new, much improved Linux server (the old server was using NT), and we also discovered a nasty memory leak in the asp code the Files Section had been built upon. So, we're rewriting the Files Section / Review Center in PHP w/ mySQL database (the old code had no database), so as you can imagine, this opens up a whole new world for us! Hopefully by the end of the week, we'll have these sections back up and you'll begin to see some of the fruits of our labors! In the meantime, feel free to vent in our Forums :)

We got something big here, and shall i say, exclusive? We at Mindless Games & Entertainment, conducted an interview with Raven Software's Project Administrator, Kenn Hoekstra about their currently in developement titles, which means Soldier of Fortune II and Jedi Knight II. Killing two birds with one stone, we also got six exclusive screenshots of Raven's upcoming shooter, Soldier of Fortune II. And to add more suspense, the only word i can tell about those shots is, awesome.
