Modcentral Interview: Hektic from Nam Mod Posted by twisted on Saturday, April 29, 2000
ModCentral takes some time to introduce the community to one of the newest mods to spring up, Nam. The interview discusses such things as features in the mod. Here's a Q&A from it:I presume that there are going to be 2 groups: vietcong and the Americans? (don't kill me i don't know much about american history)
Not exactly, Communists vs. Anti-communists. That's Americans, Australians, French, and S-Vietnamese vs. Viet Cong & N-Vietnamese. That's multiplayer. Also, they even included a screenshot of the mod's bayonet weapon!

Time2cheat.com SoF review Posted by reese on Saturday, April 29, 2000
Time2cheat.com has realease a review of Soldier of Fortune. In times where multiplayer games like Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena and Team Fortress 2 seem to have the upper hand, the die-hard singleplayer-fan can feel a bit left in the dark. To be honest, there hasn’t been a decent singleplayer first-person-shooter (FPS) since Half-Life. But before we bury the singleplayer FPS, let’s have a look at Activision’s ‘Soldier of Fortune’. Can it live up to gamer’s expectations or is it another cheap clone. Check it out here.

New Patch Information Posted by utopia on Friday, April 28, 2000
Rick Johnson posted over on the Raven Software Forums with a little info on the upcoming v1.05 patch. Here's the stuff:I will be taking next week off, but I will be bringing my work computer home and tinkering around with stuff.
I've added the "pure" server option to the menus, just need to tie it all together. PocketSoft (the makers of RTPatch) have all of my assets and will hopefully be finding the patch bug that was crashing on Win98. A CTF scoring issue has been addressed I will have some one from Aureal look into the A3D issues. If people could email me with the specifics of their system / A3D sound cards where SoF doesn't detect it, that would help.
I May. add a server password option.
If there is anything else that you would want to see in the patch or features not yet, email them to me. Make the subject "Patch Request". No promises though.
Most likely, with the 1.05 release, there will be a new SDK release with the game source code. Currently we have given out the source code to one person (under an NDA agreement) who is working on a bot.

Mullins Interview Posted by SoulTaker on Friday, April 28, 2000
GameSpy has posted an interview they conducted with John Mullins about his thoughts on Soldier of Fortune and the state of gaming today. Here's a little bit from the interview:Gamespy: When I play games like Soldier of Fortune I might feel pretty tough, but get me in a real combat situation and I'm wetting my pants. How does it feel to really be under fire? What emotions go through one's head? Can a game truly convey the realities of such an experience? Can a game ever truly prepare one for real combat?
Mullins: The only thing that can prepare you for combat is to train in an environment that closely replicates what you will experience in the real situation, using the weapons with which you will be armed, firing rounds that have the same recoil, muzzle blast, and noise, against adversaries that will react in ways that you would never expect. We haven't achieved that in the most sophisticated special operations training we do, so why do you think you could achieve it in a video game? As to emotions, you stifle emotions, control your fear, do as you have been trained. That's the school solution. In reality, it seldom works.
You can check out the rest of the interview here.

Violence in Games Article Posted by SoulTaker on Thursday, April 27, 2000
3D Game Force has put up an article about violence in video games. Their article covers what the Media and the Public see in violent video games and what we should expect as the new generation of video games start being developed. Here's a little piece from the article:Back in the golden days all there was for gaming was blocked figures bouncing up and down on your screen with your state of the art Atari 2600. As gaming has evolved the first taste of realistic violence in games came with the introduction of id Software and a little title called Wolfenstein 3D. This allowed you to see through the eyes of man you control wreaking death and destruction on to all of those Nazi's. As things progressed we saw the introduction of Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Quake. These games have revolutionized the industry and their respective companies have become gaming gods because of this.
TheFatal Interview Posted by twisted on Thursday, April 27, 2000
Marv of LinuxGames conducted an interview with Rich 'TheFatal' Whitehouse as part of Telefragged's Mod Watch. Rich is the popular creator of the hidebot (hee-day-bot) for SoF. Here's a Q&A taken from it:Marv: How is the progress of the SOF bot going at the moment? Any ETA on the first release?
Rich: Progress is going well. The AI is nearly complete and I'm working around some hitches in getting the bot to work in modes of play other than standard DM. Once that's done, there won't be much else to do before the release. I can't give much of an estimate for the release date (since one can never anticipate problems), except perhaps the always-handy When It's Done(tm). If you want to learn more about TheFatal, check out a previous interview I had with him!

CheckOut Review Posted by twisted on Thursday, April 27, 2000
Our first review for today is brought to you by CheckOut. It is the standard review complete with all the praise that Soldier of Fortune deserves. The game received an overall score of 7/10, and here's a clip from the review:While not an actual weapon, a new feature added to the game is the sound meter, which gauges how loud you're being. When you redline it, more enemies are spawned and added to the mix. But the purpose of this gauge isn't to encourage stealth -- as no self-respecting merc would avoid a firefight -- it's there to remind you that accuracy is important. The more you shoot, the louder you'll be, so a one-shot kill will save you not only ammunition, but unwanted attention as well.

SoF Bot Progress Posted by SoulTaker on Wednesday, April 26, 2000
TheFatal has updated his site with some news on the progress of his bot for Soldier of Fortune:I've got a lot done (despite only having a few hours total so far this week to work on the bot), and I'm currently trying to get the bot to work in other modes of play (such as CTF). I'm running into a few problems with that (not AI-related), but everything is fine other than that. I've got my more advanced navigation system working with the bot now among other things, and have a total of five items left on the "to-do" list.
SoF Fortress Interview Posted by SoulTaker on Wednesday, April 26, 2000
FGNOnline has put up an interview they conducted with Derek Cross of the SoF-Fortress team. Here's a little piece:So, why convert Team Fortress to SoF? "We brought it to SoF for a couple reasons: We wanted a higher level of realism while keeping it fun, the GHOUL engine was the best choice to do so. Plus, there's already a TF for Q3 and wouldn't be surprised if there is going to be one for UT soon. Some of us were kind of disappointed with TFC and wanted to make our own, and another TF for Half-Life just wouldn't work. SoF doesn't really bring much by itself to the classic gameplay, with the exception of a few weapons and items, we're using SoF because we're all a bunch of SoF fans." Also, don't forget to check out our own interview we did with another member of the SoF-Fortress team, Ben 'slay' Munroe.

The guys at NAM, an upcoming mod for Soldier of Fortune, have updated their site with the following news on their progress:This is terrific, we've got a new sound engineer, mapper, and possible player modeler. Check out the teams page for more information on them. Also, #nam has been registered on Gamesnet, so make a stop in there and in #sof!
On a personal note, things May. be moving along slow in my department because I can't put forth all my time into modeling, but I can assure you things are being worked on. I'll have some more samples of our development very soon.
I also got some forums set up. I don't really know how this will benefit the Nam community, but it will be easier on my mailbox when people need to submit ideas or comments.

Our fourth recently released review for today comes your way, compliments of GameLinks. It includes the usual eye candy such as screenshots and is a medium-sized read. They also rated SoF a score of 88%! Here's their verdict on the game:Soldier of Fortune is a success, no doubt about it. Easily hanging on in the top 10 sellers in the last few weeks, Raven has an easy winner on their hand. Is it a violent game? Yes. Should you play it if you're opposed to violence in games? Probably not. For the rest of you, don't miss out on SOF, and remember cyberbullets cause no pain.

SoF Fortress Interview Posted by SoulTaker on Friday, April 21, 2000
Modcentral has put up an interview with creator of the upcoming Soldier of Fortune mod called SoF Fortress, Wil. Here's what the mod is about straight from Wil:The mod is currently called SoF Fortress (but that's a working title). Now i've not been able to do much multiplayer gaming over the net on SoF, so i don't know what a reasonable amount of players is, but i'm gonna say for the moment it's for 16 players, perhaps 20. It's a teambased mod, likened to the TFC or CounterStrike mods, but with reallife weapons and classes (sort of).
SoF Review @ MI Posted by SoulTaker on Thursday, April 20, 2000
Monolithic Illusions has put up their review of Soldier of Fortune. Here's a little cut-n-paste from the review:The graphics of this game demonstrate that even the aging Quake II engine still can pack a punch if it's used correctly. Raven's addition of the GHOUL rendering system allowed many cool graphical tricks. The only thing I can find here is that some objects have extremely low polygons. Wheels on the trucks could almost be square. Weapons look crappy (until you pick them up - then they look sweet). The inclusion of a detail texture system makes the levels look far more realistic. In addition, some of the animations just remind you of the movies. For the most part, the in game cut scenes are performed very well, and really enhance the game-play. You can check out the rest of this review here.
Update On Patch Posted by utopia on Thursday, April 20, 2000
There is a glitch in the new 1.04 patch for Soldier of Fortune. Here's Rick's .plan to explain:The SoF V1.04 BETA patch will be out shortly. Unfortunately, there was a last minute problem patching the main PAK file, so I had to remove those changes as well as the EAX changes (which required new data). RTPatch seems to crash on Win98 machines when I included that PAK file - I have to wait until Monday to get technical support from the people who make RTPatch.

SoF Linux News Posted by SoulTaker on Thursday, April 20, 2000
Linux Games has received word from Scott Draeker, President of Loki about information on Soldier of Fortune for Linux:Anyone who knows, if the Linux version of SOF will be the Full or Low Violence version? Is the Windows version of SOF ever been sold in Germany? I wonder why it's not on the "index" ...
On http://www.ravensoft.com/buysof.shtml I can find three different versions of SOF:
- Soldier of Fortune Full Violence SKU (US Only) - Soldier of Fortune Low Violence SKU (US Only) - Soldier of Fortune Full Violence SKU (UK and Europe, excluding France and Germany)
Stefan
SoF for Linux will be the full version. There is a parental lockout feature for those who wish to play the less violent version.
As for Germany, there are several levels of prohibition. I would anticipate SoF to go beyond being indexed and be banned. Anyone selling the product there would be subject to criminal sanctions.

To keep my word on my duties at S-o-F.com, here is my first interview. I conducted an interview with Matt 'utopia' Blessing, Project Coordinator/Mapper of Operation Overlord. In case you have been under a rock for the past few days, Operation Overlord is a team based multiplayer mod for SoF. Here's a Q&A from it:
twisted: Operation Overlord states that it is a team based multiplayer mod for SoF. Do you intend to make maps that can hold a huge amount of players or do you want to make them for a small amount.
utopia: Our maps will probably be suitable for 8 vs 8 and more. I wouldn't recommend playing with less than 6 players total, because like I said, this is a team based mod, meaning you will actually need a team to play the mod. Unlike Team Fortress where one person can run the flag.
Drum Roll Please....Welcome twisted! Posted by twisted on Wednesday, April 19, 2000
Howdy! My name's twisted and am the newest recruit here at S-o-F.com. You May. remember me from such sites as SOF.net (I feel like Troy McLeur from the Simpsons). Basically, my role right now is to do news updates as well as continue my beloved "What If..."s and do some interviews. In fact, if you got any what ifs of your own, feel free to drop me a line. Also, send me an e-mail about who you would want me to interview. And please, don't ask to interview someone like Mr. T, stick to the SoF scene:)

SoF Patch Tomorrow! Posted by SoulTaker on Wednesday, April 19, 2000
Rick Johnson of Raven has made a post to the official Raven forums saying the following about the Soldier of Fortune patch:04/20/2000 10:14a 1,146,381 sof104patch.exe It will take about 15 minutes to process on your computer (needed to patch the EAL (EAX) files and a CTF map in the main pak file). And the topic is "Patch will be available late Friday afternoon". So look for the patch tomorrow!

Sharky Extreme has put up their review of Soldier of Fortune. Here's a little clip from the review:While Raven decided to throw in the odd mildly challenging puzzle to keep things interesting, the heart of the game is thrilling armed action. Action varies depending on the situation and your weapon of choice. In one mission you May. be using the excellent sniper rifle (imagine the Unreal Tournament sniper rifle but with a cool incremental zoom rather than a smooth one) to take out enemy militiamen. You can read the rest of the review here.
SoF @ The Mushroom Posted by SoulTaker on Wednesday, April 19, 2000
The Mushroom has put up a quick review of Soldier of Fortune. Here's a piece:Lately I've really been missing single-player FPSs. I'd almost forgotten what it was like to have "plot" and "theme" in the levels. Soldier of Fortune brought it all rushing back to me. To put it bluntly, although this game is not perfect, it does kick a lot of ass. If you've been missing what Half-Life gave you, go out and pick up SoF, you won't be disappointed.
SoF Review @ 3DR Posted by SoulTaker on Wednesday, April 19, 2000
3D Rage has put up a review of Soldier of Fortune. Here's a clip from the review:You've all heard the standard first person shooter introduction that discusses the fact that the first person shooter market is saturated with mediocre games. Well, I've noticed in the past six months that almost every first person shooter that's been released has been a damn fine piece of work, with games entering the market such as Thief 2, Quake 3: Arena, Unreal Tournament, Rogue Spear, and the list goes on. So the question isn't whether or not Soldier of Fortune will revolutionize this "mediocrity plagued genre", but whether or not Soldier of Fortune will break this streak of excellence. Well, the answer to that question would defintely be a resounding 'NO!', as Soldier of Fortune is one of the most engrossing action packed titles that I've had the pleasure of experiencing in the past six months of gaming brilliance. The best way to describe the game would be a mixture of the suspense and realism of Rogue Spear combined with the frantic action packed gameplay of Quake 2. Read on to see what this game offers the hardcore gamer.

More SoF Bot Information Posted by utopia on Wednesday, April 19, 2000
I was browsing around at The Fatal's site and noticed this update on the Soldier of Fortune bots:I'm making good progress on the SoF bot. It's in a releasable and usable state right now, but I still have a lot to do. To give an idea of how much work there is, I currently have exactly 17 items on my "to-do" list marked as done, and exactly 17 which need to get done (and I have been saving the items which require more work for last). But, once it's ready, it should have a pretty impressive feature set. I'll probably get a page set up for the bot in a while, if I get the spare time and I feel like doing it.

SoF Bot in Development! Posted by SoulTaker on Monday, April 17, 2000
Bot Epidemic is reporting that "TheFatal" is currently developing a bot for Soldier of Fortune and here is what he had to say about his progress on it:TheFatal: I've gotten the navigation and combat code done. I'm working on a new hearing system (a lot more advanced than the Jumbot's) at the moment, then I'll start working in some more advanced navigation routines (navigation at the moment is a fairly basic waypoint system). After that's done and I fix up the weapon bugs I'm having (due to the way SoF's inventory system works), it'll be all ready for a first release.
Raven is providing great support (much more-so than Valve ever did, in fact), so I should be able to overcome any SDK or engine issues that I might run into quickly.

Operation Overlord Interview! Posted by SoulTaker on Wednesday, April 12, 2000
The Oxygen Tank has put up an interview with our own utopia about his upcoming Soldier of Fortune mod, Operation Overlord! Here's a piece from the interview: Could you please briefly explain to our readers what Operation Overlord is gearing up to offer the rapidly growing Soldier of Fortune community?
Operation Overlord is going to add some serious excitement into the Multiplayer field of Soldier of Fortune. The realistic environments, weapons, skins, and models were just crying out at me to try to do a mod with it. I think we're going to offer some intense action that rivals that of Unreal Tournament, or even Counter-Strike for Half-Life, which will be tough to live up to. It will be some really fun team, class-based missions that should be a blast to play. You can check out the rest of the interview here. The interview also includes a boatload of new information about the upcoming mod.

Please Welcome The First Hosted Sites to S-o-F.com Posted by Hunter on Monday, April 10, 2000
Two hosted sites are open for business today, they are: Operation Overlord and Soldier of Fortune Demo & Config Central. Operation overlord is a team-based multiplayer mod for Soldier of Fortune. Two of our own talented crew, utopia and Fraust, are bringing this mod to life. It sounds awesome! I can't wait!
Utopia sends this info:Operation Overlord is intense combat that requires reliance on team members to carry out jobs they are assigned to do. It's not capture the flag though, but mission based play like Assault for Unreal Tournament. One team Attacks and the other Defends. After one round, teams are switched, defenders attack, attackers defend. There is no set time limit, so a beach invasion May. become a stalemate and last for an hour or so, until the team utilizes the in-game map feature and the captain places waypoints and mission objectives for individual members. To enhance the game we have added classes to the game. You can now choose from one of the 8 classes, each with special abilities and weaponry.
The SoF Demo & Config Central will house some of the nifty .cfg's you can have to enhance play and also be able to view other people's game demos. This site is not 100% completed but look for it to be up soon. [By the way, Config Central is being brought to you by delete.]
